The LAN is the Local Area Network.

This is how the devices in your office connect to each other. This includes the local cabling, switches and WiFi systems

The WAN is the Wide Area Network.

For most small to medium site businesses this will be the Internet normally connected though a broadband router.

The border between your LAN and the WAN needs protecting. Just like border control at the airport, if this is not managed correctly, your data could get stuck in a long queue.
